Samson Trammel's Letter to Jane Doe, aka Lillian Avery
My Dear Miss Doe:
I doubt that is your real name, but I cannot blame you for concealing it from me. I am sorry you had to see me in such a state, or, indeed, at all. I am also sorry for the handwriting, but I do not like to ask for favors, like a typewriter.
I am not a good man. I know this, and I wish to make amends for what I have done. I know however much I do, it is too late for me, but it is not too late for you.
You need to be with good people, not to visit bad men like me. You are a beautiful woman, and you deserve a man who will marry you before he thinks of laying a hand on you, and who will tell you how beautiful all your parts are and make you smile to hear it and make you happy. You should not visit people like me.
It is not too late for you. You may even be able to help your friend Joyce. She needs help. She called me, asking for that drug I used for so many years. It is an evil thing, something no one should ever consume. I am not selling it or making it, not any more, but if she wants some so badly, I am afraid she might find some. I think she may have already taken some, and if she did, she will want more.
This saddens me, but there are people who may be able to help her. You may be able to help her, Jane Doe. There is a woman named Lillian Avery, a good and beautiful Christian woman from a good family. She is trying to help people like your friend Joyce. She cannot undo the past, and I know that Joyce has worked for people who are also bad people. I do not judge to say that they are worse or better than I am, but they are dangerous, and they have not repented. They are still out there and they corrupt others as I once did, but I do not think they will try to hurt you or to stop you from getting Joyce the help she needs.
Lillian Avery has created a place where people can go to recover from the evil thing I used to spread. Jane Doe, there are so many people I have hurt with it. I am ashamed. But help your friend to go there and get better.
You do not want my prayers, but I will tell you this: you are on the edge of a cliff. This is not a good place to be. Come back, come away from the edge and find good people and a good husband.
